Rural Virginia
Nestled among the rolling countryside of Keswick, Gordonsville, and eastern Albemarle County, SJFLFC is rooted in a rural region shaped by agriculture, faith, family traditions, and generations of community connection. The area is home to historic churches, farms, schools, and neighborhoods where relationships often span decades and family stories are passed down from one generation to the next.
This community has long been defined by perseverance, collaboration, and a commitment to helping neighbors thrive. During the era of segregation, local African American families worked together to help build and sustain educational opportunities for their children, including the original St. John Rosenwald School. That same spirit of determination and shared investment continues today through the preservation and revitalization of SJFLFC as a place of education, wellness, and unity.
While rural communities offer strong personal connections and a rich cultural heritage, they also face unique challenges related to transportation, education, accessibility, economic opportunity, and available resources. SJFLFC exists to help bridge those gaps by creating a welcoming gathering place where individuals and families can access programs, events, cultural experiences, and community support close to home. Whether through health activities, educational programming, heritage preservation, or fellowship events, SJFLFC continues to strengthen the fabric of the community while honoring the history that shaped it.
Our Community
The SJFLFC community is made up of individuals from many generations and backgrounds who share a common commitment to preserving history, strengthening families, and building opportunities for the future. Alumni of the historic St. John Rosenwald School remain deeply connected to the Center and continue to share their stories, memories, and experiences to help educate future generations about the importance of African American education and community resilience.
Our community also includes the dedicated members of St. John Baptist Church, volunteer board members, local families, educators, students, historians, community advocates, and supporters from across the region.
Young adults, new professionals, and volunteers bring new ideas and energy while working alongside longtime community leaders and alumni who carry generations of knowledge and lived experience. This intergenerational connection is one of SJFLFC’s greatest strengths and reflects the organization’s mission to unite people through heritage, health, education, and fellowship.
Many individuals who support SJFLFC have personal ties to the school, the church, or the surrounding rural communities, while others are drawn to the organization’s mission of cultural preservation, racial healing, education, and community wellness. Together, they help create a welcoming and inclusive environment where history is honored, relationships are strengthened, and new opportunities can grow.
From community events and oral history projects to wellness activities and youth engagement, SJFLFC continues to serve as a place where people of all ages can gather, learn, contribute, and become part of a living legacy.
